Budget Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

  • Author: Emma
  • Total Time: 30-35 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings 1x

Description

A cheap, crispy, and healthy air fryer sweet potato fry recipe designed for a single serving. Using arrowroot powder and a soaking technique ensures maximum crunch with minimal oil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs / 680g)
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt (or 1/4 tsp table salt)
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly. Leave skin on for texture and nutrients. Cut into 1/4-inch thick uniform sticks.
  2. Place cut fries in a bowl of cold water and soak for 10 minutes to draw out excess starch.
  3. Drain water and pat fries completely dry using paper towels. Ensure they are surface-dry to prevent steaming.
  4. Place dried fries in a mixing bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and toss until lightly coated.
  5. Sprinkle arrowroot powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne over the fries. Toss again to ensure an even, dusty coating.
  6. Preheat air fryer to 380°F (190°C).
  7. Arrange fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd; cook in batches if necessary.
  8. Cook for 10 minutes, shaking the basket or tossing fries halfway through.
  9. Increase heat to 400°F (200°C) and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  10. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Do not skip the soaking and drying steps; they are crucial for crispiness. Ensure fries are in a single layer to allow air circulation. If using cornstarch instead of arrowroot, results may be slightly less crisp over time. Reheat leftovers in the air fryer, not the microwave.
